National Apprenticeship Week 2025 – Our management assistant, Thomas, shares his story
After completing my A-levels in 2022, I faced the same questions as many young people: 
- What should I study?
- Should I go to university?
- Is the debt worth it?
- Are apprenticeships a good option?
To figure things out, I decided to take a year off and gain real-world experience. I got a job with a local organisation, which helped me prepare for working life.
By the end of 2023, I attended an NHS careers open day that changed my thinking. I realised an apprenticeship would be a great way to learn on the job while contributing to an organisation. I could gain valuable experience and still learn the theory behind my work.
When I saw a business administration apprenticeship opportunity at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, it caught my attention. I’ve always been interested in business, and this seemed like a fantastic chance to develop my skills.
It was an easy decision to make as I’d be part of a public sector organisation, supporting healthcare and the option to go to university later was there if I wanted to.
So I applied, thinking, “Why not?” If university was still on the table later, nothing would stop me. I haven’t looked back since—and there’s even the potential to do a fully funded degree in the future.
Real Opportunities from Day One
I was placed with Northumbria Healthcare Facilities Management (NHFM), which keeps hospitals running behind the scenes. They handle:
- Catering – Providing meals for patients and staff
- Maintenance & Engineering – Keeping hospital infrastructure safe.
- Domestic Services – Ensuring a clean and hygienic environment.
- Estates Management – Maintaining and improving NHS facilities.
From the start, I was trusted with real work—shadowing different departments, contributing to projects, and helping improve processes.
But what I love most is the people. The team is friendly, hardworking, and always supportive. My manager, in particular, has been a huge part of my development, always pushing me to grow.
Career Growth and Learning
After just eight months, I secured a permanent role as NHFM’s Management Assistant—while still completing my apprenticeship. I’ve also completed fully funded courses, including the ICDL IT course, to build my skills further.
