A dedicated catering professional whose kindness, leadership and commitment have made a lasting impact on patients, staff and colleagues has been recognised at Skills for Health’s Our Health Heroes Awards, with Kim Ashcroft from Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust named winner in the Operational Support Worker of the Year category.
Based at North Tyneside General Hospital, Kim has worked within NHS catering services for 27 years, progressing from catering assistant to catering supervisor. Throughout her career, she has gone above and beyond to support both staff and patients, creating a welcoming, community focused environment within the hospital restaurant.
Kim is widely recognised for her commitment to her team and colleagues. She has volunteered to work every Christmas Day for 25 consecutive years, ensuring others can spend time with their families while keeping the hospital kitchen up and running on one of the most important days of the year.
Her impact extends beyond day-to-day service delivery. Kim has played a key role in creating an inclusive workplace culture, supporting colleagues from diverse backgrounds and celebrating events including Chinese New Year and Black History Month. She is also known for her compassion towards patients and visitors, particularly those who regularly rely on the restaurant for meals and social connection.
Reflecting on her award, Kim said: “I’m incredibly proud to receive this award at the Our Health Heroes Awards. Supporting our staff and patients, especially during busy or difficult times, has always meant a great deal to me. It’s about creating a warm, welcoming place where people feel care for.”
Brian Cowan, chief operating officer at Northumbria Healthcare Facilities Management said: “Kim exemplifies the very best of NHS operational support. Her long-standing commitment, leadership and compassion have created a positive environment for staff and patients alike, making a real and lasting difference every day.”
