Rutherford Cancer Centres provide state-of-the-art personalised cancer treatments to patients in the UK and internationally. The North East Rutherford Centre was custom built to offer the latest in diagnostic technology and treatments including proton beam therapy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy, in addition to wellbeing services.

Designed by JDDK Architects and constructed by Interserve, the building opened in 2018. The Centre has won a series of awards for its innovative design and contribution including the Building Project of the Year at the Constructing Excellence Awards in 2019.

At the heart of the Centre is a 55-ton proton beam facility which provides an advanced form of external radiotherapy using high energy proton beams that allow for more targeted treatment of tumours.

Northumbria Healthcare Facilities Management supported Rutherford by managing the initial soft landings exercise to operationalize the centre from its opening in 2018. The partnership continued to develop with NHFM providing a range of hard and soft facilities management services to Rutherford and ensuring compliance at all times with the estates and engineering standards set out in the UK healthcare standards, the Health Technical Memorandum.

In April 2020, Rutherford signed a new 3-year contract with NHFM for Total Facilities Management Services at its North East Centre. The range of services now delivered includes engineering, maintenance, repairs, cleaning, catering and security.
